Ragtime Show

Kids parts in Ragtime?
My daughter is auditioning for Ragtime in a couple months, and I would like to know all the kids parts in the show. Anywhere from 8-15 years old. In the description please tell how old they are approximately in normal productions, how big the part is, solos they have, and anything else you think is important! Thank you!
Also, is there a kids chorus?
How old is Little Girl?
Do you think a 12 year old could pass for Little Girl?
Little Girl – Tateh’s daughter. Doesn’t really speak, maybe has 5 lines, sometimes less.
There’s only three children in the show (Little Boy/Edgar, Little Girl, and Colehouse Walker III who is a toddler at the end of the play) but they appear in the larger numbers like the opening/title song and the little girl is always around when Tateh is, so she has a decent amount of stage time. Oh, and the vacation scenes have the kids in them.
Other than that there’s Evelyn Nesbitt, but she’s likely to be played by an older girl (about 18) and Sarah is also in the 18-20 year old range.
Edit:
Little Girl doesn’t have an age listed, but she’s probably around 8 years old. Even though the entire story of ragtime takes place over a 15ish year period (the main story in about 7 years) they don’t age during the show. And no, there is no chorus, again there are only 3 children (possibly only 2 cast) in the entire production.
New edit:
It depends on the director, but she may be too old. Little Girl is supposed to be a fairly young girl character and is the counter part to Little Boy/Edgar (who is the same age). But again, it depends on your daughters looks. When I was 12 I looked older, but I’ve meet a 20 year old that looked like she was about 8, so it entirely depends.

Cuttin’ Up $34.95 Traces the acceptance of jazz as an expression of American culture. Court Carney takes readers back to the 1920s and early 1930s to describe how jazz musicians navigated the rocky racial terrain of the music business, and reveals how the new media of the timethe phonograph, radio, and filmplayed a key role in accelerating its diffusion as a modernist art form. The first history of jazz to emphasize the connections between these disseminating technologies and specific locales, the book focuses on four citiesNew Orleans, New York, Chicago, and Los Angelesto show how each city produced a distinctive style of jazz. Shows us how the rise of ragtime interlinked with the mass production of pianos, how the development of radio challenged segregated neighborhoods and musicians” unions, and, above all, how sheer musical power overcame racist resistance and jazz became America”s music. Irving Berlin: Songs from the Melting Pot: The Formative Years, 1907-1914 $63.32 In Irving Berlin: The Formative Years, Charles Hamm traces the early years of this most famous and distinctive American songwriter. His first piece, Marie from Sunny Italy , was written in 1907, and his first great success, Alexander’s Ragtime Band (1914), attracted more public and media attention than any other song of its decade. Beginning with Berlin’s immigrant roots – he came to New York in 1893 from Russia – Hamm shows how the young Berlin quickly revealed the talent for music and lyrics that was to mark his entire career. Berlin first wrote for the vaudeville stage, turning out songs that drew on the various ethnic cultures of the city. These pieces, with their Jewish, Italian, German, Irish, and black protagonists singing in appropriate dialects, reflected the urban mix of New York’s melting pot. Berlin drew on various musical styles, especially ragtime, for such songs as Alexander’s Ragtime Band , and Hamm devotes an entire chapter to the song and its success. The book also details Berlin’s early efforts to write for the Broadway musical stage, culminating in 1914 with his first musical comedy, Watch Your Step, featuring the popular dance team, Vernon and Irene Castle. A great hit on Broadway and in London, the show was a key piece in the Americanization of the musical comedy. Blessed with prodigious ambition and energy, Berlin wrote at least 4 or 5 new songs a week, many of which were discarded. He nevertheless published 190 songs between 1907 and 1914, an astonishing number considering that when Berlin arrived in America, he knew not a single word of English. |
