Girl Action

2011 Was an action packed year for Movies
While film trailers for upcoming action blockbusters like Captain America and Conan the Barbarian have been online for some time now, there has also been no shortage of explosive flicks that have already made their mark on cinema audiences in the first six months of 2011.
As we reach the halfway point of the year, maybe now is the time to look back on some of the more successful action films to have hit the silver screen – if only so we don’t miss them when they arrive on DVD and Blu-ray further down the line. Below are just five of the best action-packed, popcorn movies that have had people lining up to buy 241 cinema tickets since January.
The Mechanic
The first month of 2011 saw everybody’s favourite British hard man back on the big screen, as Jason Statham appeared across the nation in The Mechanic. Directed by Simon West, who is set to be reunited with Statham and Sylvester Stallone in the upcoming sequel to The Expendables next year, the film followed a top hitman and his apprentice. Explosive, thrilling and filled with great fight sequences, The Mechanic is a great way to spend a hard-boiled evening.
Drive Angry 3D
February saw the arrival of Nicolas Cage’s latest, Drive Angry 3D. The movie was a firm favourite on film news websites everywhere amongst a certain kind of audience when it was announced as it promised high-octane car chases and the delicious Amber Heard. It certainly delivered when it finally came to theatres as an absolutely unabashed B-movie thrill ride.
Source Code
Another film that many in the film community were looking forward to was Source Code. Directed by Duncan Jones, the son of David Bowie and the man behind 2009’s incredible drama Moon, Source Code was a big hit with the critics. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a man who awakes to find he is being used as part of a government experiment to bring down a terrorist, the movie uses elements of sci-fi and time travel to tell a brilliant action tale.
Thor
The first of two major blockbusters (the other being Captain America) featuring Marvel characters thrilled audiences in April. Thor followed Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk in introducing more people to the world of superhero team-ups.
Hanna
Finally, if you thought 2011 had so far been a playground for action men only, you’d be wrong. In Hanna, Saoirse Ronin showed all the boys she could be just as formidable as a 16-year-old girl trained to be the perfect assassin. The film comes to DVD and Blu-ray in August and could well be one people have missed during its short run at the box office.
